Ragnarok Online vs. Ragnarok Online Zero -what actually changes

guide

Zero is neither Classic nor Renewal. Below is what actually changes, and — just as important — which numbers nobody can verify yet.

Which “Ragnarok Online” are we even comparing?

There is no single Ragnarok Online to compare Zero against. Most players mean one of two things.

Classic / Pre-Renewal is the game as it played before the 2010 Renewal update. Base level caps at 99, job level at 50 (70 for transcendent classes), damage formulas are the old ones, and there is no EXP penalty for farming monsters far below your level.

Renewal is the modern official game. It raised the cap of base & job level, added third job classes, rewrote the damage and defence formulas, and introduced an EXP penalty scaled to the level gap between you and the monster.

Ragnarok Online Zero is neither. It runs on the Renewal engine but pulls a large amount of its feel and balance back toward Classic, then layers systems on top that exist in neither version.

This is the single most common source of bad information for Zero players: a number copied from a Renewal database is often wrong, and a number copied from a Classic database is often wrong too — just in a different direction.

Ragnarok Zero: Global launches on 18 August 2026, 00:00 UTC and is built on the Taiwanese Zero service. That matters throughout this post: almost everything documented about Zero today describes the Taiwanese or Korean build, and Global will not match it in every detail.

At a glance

Classic / Pre-Renewal Renewal Zero (Global)
Level ceiling base 99 / job 50 (99/70 trans) base 175 / job 60 not confirmed for launch
Job tree up to transcendent up to third jobs six first jobs + second-job paths (later)
Death penalty ~1% base EXP ~1% base EXP reported ~10% — unverified
Low-level farming no EXP penalty penalty by level gap to be verified
Gear stats fixed fixed fixed + random option rolls
Payment Depending on Region Depending on Region Monthly fee + Cash Shop

On classes, Gravity’s head of game design has stated that Second Succession classes are not part of the current update plan, and that the launch classes instead mix skills drawn from both the second and the early third job tiers. New episodes, Zero-exclusive maps, and expansion classes including Ninja, Gunslinger and Super Novice are planned for later updates — the launch roster is a starting point, not the final shape of the game.

What it costs

Access is sold as a Game Pass in fixed time blocks rather than an open-ended subscription. EUR pricing at launch:

Pass Duration Price Effective / month
1 Month 30 days €9.99 €9.99
3 Months 90 days €25.99 €8.66
6 Months 180 days €42.99 €7.17
12 Months 365 days €76.99 €6.42

Every tier includes a bonus item package. Payment runs through Xsolla, PayPal or Stripe, and the store offers multiple currencies — the figures above are the EUR rates, so your region may differ.

Dying costs real money now

In Classic and Renewal, death costs roughly 1% of your base EXP. Zero’s penalty is widely reported to be an order of magnitude steeper — around 10% of your progress toward the current level — but that figure comes from community sources, not from Gravity, and we have not verified it on Global.

:warning: That number is deliberately not compared against Classic EXP tables. Zero’s EXP curve is scaled differently, so absolute values across versions mean nothing. Until we have the live Zero curve, we cannot tell you what share of a level that death actually was — only that it was a large one.

Whatever the exact percentage turns out to be, the design intent is visible in play: dying on an unfamiliar map is expensive enough that you scout it, bring escape items, and go with people. In Classic, dying is an annoyance. In Zero, dying is a decision you made several minutes earlier.

This ties into the broader redesign. Skills and class roles were reworked so that each job brings something a party actually wants, rather than a handful of jobs carrying and the rest tagging along. Solo grinding still works — the reward curve just doesn’t treat it as the main path.

Gear: the biggest structural difference

If you only read one section, read this one.

Random options

Equipment dropped by monsters in Zero can carry additional randomly rolled lines — ATK, cast time, elemental and race modifiers, resistances, HP and SP — pulled from a pool tied to that drop. The pools are structured: some lines are guaranteed, others roll only by chance, and the available ranges differ between weapons, armour, robes and shoes.

A weapon is no longer a known quantity you look up once. It is a base item plus a roll, and the roll can be worth more than the item.

One consequence worth stating plainly:

:warning: The pool depends on where the item dropped, not only on the item itself.
The same base item obtained from different sources can draw from different pools. Any database that attaches random options to items alone is modelling the system incorrectly.

Enchanting, refining, cards

Zero keeps enchanting and refining but rebalances the risk — refine outcomes, material costs and failure behaviour are Zero-specific and should not be assumed from Renewal tables. Card effects went through the same rebalancing pass, so cards that were build-defining in Classic are not automatically build-defining here.

What we do not know yet

Open questions as of launch week
  • Monster stats and drop rates. Not present in the Global client — they live on the server. Every monster stat table circulating for Zero today traces back to the same unverified Korean Zero data dump, passed between sites without provenance. We are not republishing it as fact.
  • The live EXP curve. The tables in circulation are Classic values and do not describe Zero. Without the real curve we cannot express drop-offs, death penalties or leveling speed as percentages, which is what actually matters. Measuring the EXP requirement per level on live Global is a priority.
  • Drop rates for random option pools, and the probability of rolling a given line within a pool. Not published anywhere official.
  • Whether Global matches Taiwan on any given value. Most of what is documented describes the Taiwanese build.

How to read numbers on this site

Every value in the database carries a source. Borrowed values stay flagged as provisional until someone verifies them on Global.

If a value has no verified source yet, we say so rather than presenting a confident number. That is the whole point of the exercise.
